Spelling Station Idea!

A while back, I had my husband make me a mini pocket chart stand that I could use with my Target dollar section pocket charts. Now I just needed an idea of what to use them for! I had been trying to think of some different ways for my students to practice spelling words during literacy stations.  So, I decided to write our weekly spelling words on sentence strips, but I used two different colors. One color for the spelling pattern for the week and then one for the beginning or ending sounds. Then cut apart each sound. That way the students could practice putting the words together and taking them apart. They can also extend their learning by making other words with the spelling pattern that aren't on our list!

I also figured out a good way that multiple students could work on this chart at one time. I put two pocket charts back to back. I keep the spelling words from the previous week up on one side and add the current words to the other side. (Then as you add new lists you can send home the old words in a baggie with a friend as a fun reward! )  My kids then record their words in their workstation journals. :) They seem to really like it! It is a very 'easy to put together' station.

Any other fun ideas for this mini chart out there?!?!

  2. Wow that is brilliant and yay for handy husbands! Love the color of the stands. I saw a really cool idea at a GLAD workshop where students worked together to build sentences in a mini pocket chart. Super cute blog! Glad I found you!

  4. Sheila- Yea! I use my big charts for the GLAD sentence patterning Chart...my kids love that too!

Jacki- It's basically PVC Pipe from home depot that I spray painted. You can 'google' small or table top PVC chart stands and there are many websites with directions! I just had my husband measure the dollar target charts then add about two inches to the length and width for the chart stand. :) cheap and easy!

  10. Maybe you could play some type of Battleship game where you set the cards up in grid like coordinates. Hmmm, my brain is thinking now because I have one of the mini pocket charts.

BTW- I seem to have let you fall off my radar. I am not sure when I followed you but I tried to follow you again today! Lol! I think I also forgot that you are a Texas teacher and not that far away from me! =)

I would love for you to come visit me when you get the chance. I think some of us are working on a Bloggy get together for the Houston area! =)

    Your blog is so cute!

It isn't reading, but you could have one student arrange shapes, words, whatever on one side and then instruct (verbally) the student on the other side to arrange identical parts (step by step) When they're done they can check it to see if they got it right
